Intelligent Infrastructure
Emerging Markets
With the adoption of intelligent infrastructure, many new markets and startups will be spawned.
Plug-in electric vehicles present the risk of accidental demand peaks; yet there is opportunity to co-ordinate dispatch of vast quantities of distributed stored energy through vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid discharge. These and other storage mechanisms will be championed by players who seek to fundamentally change the economics of intermittent renewable energy, and of existing peaking capacity.
Providers of network monitoring and communications technology, substation automation, and dynamic sensor facilities will be sought after; the return on these investments for network businesses and grid operators, while contingent on local performance standards and existing asset condition, will be compelling. This trend will extend beyond the meter. Home energy management systems, fuelled by more granular and frequent data, and co-ordinated through local load centres, will make energy-efficiency simple, more cost-effective and routine.
Marchment Hill’s consultants provide practical, research-based insights into the opportunities for competitive advantage. We help our clients understand the barriers to entry in these new markets, the relevant public policy challenges, and the strategies to best defend existing value.
